ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter
The Northern Ohio Chapter was founded in 1988 to serve the needs of those living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and their caregivers. The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. ALSA covers all the bases - research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy - in providing help and hope to those facing the disease.

The ALS Association (National Office and the Northern Ohio Chapter) operates under a shared mission: to help people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and to leave no stone unturned in search for the cure.

We work together to accomplish our mission. The Northern Ohio Chapter focuses primarily on helping local patients and families living with ALS while the National Office focuses primarily on research and advocacy. The Chapter supports the National Office through revenue sharing and research contributions. The National Office supports the Chapters by providing up-to-date information and materials.

Our accomplishments are made possible by the generosity of others. From the smallest donation to the largest gift, donors touch the ALS community with hope for the future.

Bellefaire JCB
About Bellefaire JCB
Bellefaire JCB was founded as the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Asylum in 1868 in Cleveland, Ohio. At that time, 80 children resided in the orphanage and by 1900, 400 children were cared for by the home located at E 55th Street and Woodland Avenue in the city proper. In 1924, the orphanage hired its first psychiatrist, and in 1928 the cornerstone of the new campus was laid at the agency’s current site, 22001 Fairmount Boulevard in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The orphanage was renamed Bellefaire. In 1941, the agency began offering therapeutic services for emotionally disturbed children. And in 1954 it opened admissions to non-Jewish children. In 1961 the Jewish Big Brother Association became part of Bellefaire, in 1973 it opened the program to include mentoring girls, and in 1983 amended its name to Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association. In 1979 Bellefaire began offering residential treatment, community-based services, and early childhood programs, and during the 1980s: specialized foster care, alcohol and substance abuse prevention services, and the Parent and Children Together (PACT) program.

Bellefaire is part of the administrative oversight company called Wingspan Care Group (www.wingspancg.org). Wingpsan partner agencies include: Applewood Centers (www.applewoodcenters.org), Bellefaire JCB, and Monarch Teaching Technologies (MTT) (www.monarchtt.com), a spin-off, for-profit technology company that produces educational software for children with autism.

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sister Association
The Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association (JBBBSA) helps at-risk children become confident, competent and caring individuals by providing them with professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with caring adult mentors. Cleveland’s Jewish Big Brothers was formally organized in 1919

Growing up is hard work! Children today face problems we never dreamed of when we were young. A mentor can make a difference as to whether or not a child succeeds in developing the self-esteem and confidence necessary to grow into healthy, productive adults.

Affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) since its founding, JBBBSA makes meaningful, supervised matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and Jewish children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18. The Littles typically are from single-parent families, recently resettled immigrant families, and/or families with special circumstances.

JBBBSA’s model of professionally-supported youth mentoring has been affirmed by rigorous, ongoing external evaluation. A nationwide impact study, conducted by Public/Private Ventures, comparing boys and girls who were matched with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and an equal number of children waiting to be matched, found that 18 months after spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in the program, were:
• 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
• 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
• 52% less likely to skip school
• 37% less likely to skip a class
• 33% less likely to hit someone
They also found that the Littles were more confident of their performance in schoolwork and getting along better with their families.

The Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association is a division of Bellefaire JCB. More information can be found online at www.jbbbsa.org or by calling (216) 320-8385.

New Avenues to Independence
A group of dedicated parents founded New Avenues to Independence as the Parents’ Volunteer Association in 1952 to provide a variety of experiences, such as education and social interaction, for children with disabilities whose only other alternative was living in institutions. As the children grew, so did their need for additional opportunities which were unavailable elsewhere. It was then that we began to seek out alternatives. We believed a group home setting would provide a pleasant living environment for the individuals and promote the development of daily living skills, physical abilities, and interpersonal skills. Therefore, in 1971, New Avenues became the owner and operator of the first private, non-profit group home in Cuyahoga County.

Today, the mission of New Avenues is “to provide opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs to become more independent and productive members of society by offering the highest quality support services and developing innovative and inclusive programs.” New Avenues has, over time, evolved into an organization that serves over 550 individuals with disabilities such as, Down syndrome, autism, mental health, and significant medical issues. As a result, comprehensive care is provided for the individuals that New Avenues serves. We offer habilitative, therapeutic (music, language, art, occupational, and physical), recreational, medical, nursing, transitional respite, vocational, and residential services. New Avenues also offers children’s and Mainstream Housing programs. We are currently providing services in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, Summit, and Erie counties, Ohio.
