Socialization for seniors

It’s important to socialize no matter how old you are but it is even more important as you get older. While you were younger, you didn’t have time to socialize too much because you were too busy raising your family and working. Now the pace of life is slowing down a bit and you now have time to socialize but you have no one to socialize with because you never made any friends along the way that would be part of your long-term friendships.

If you have friendships with others from your past you have stayed connected with over the years then that is great. Make sure to keep those friendships going by calling and meeting at least once a month. Invite new people into your group to keep it exciting and don’t worry about not having anything to do. Go to a museum, to a park, to the movies, or just get together to discuss a book that you all have read. Your possibilities are endless and so are your relationships.

There are senior centers that offer socialization. Although bingo is a traditional game to play, it is still popular and fun too. What’s wrong with a good game of bingo? You can also choose to make it a girls’ night out or a boys’ night out so you can plan an afternoon at your favorite restaurant and a little shopping. Everyone can use a day out shopping.

You can also lead a socialization group in your area. Every day of the week can have an activity planned just for certain groups. If you know of a few people who like to sew or quilt then start a group. If you know of anyone who likes to fish then begin a fishing club in your area. Help the younger generation to learn how to cook, sew, and can vegetables and fruits. This is very important to the younger generation and you may not realize how many people actually want to learn all about these things. Being a mentor is a very important task for your generation.

Don’t overbook your schedule because you want to enjoy life too. You want to do what you like to do for yourself at least one to two times a week. When filling your schedule make sure that you have someone helping you along the way. You don’t want to do everything yourself otherwise you may not enjoy it any more.

Invite your family to be a part of your socialization. You can invite them over to your house one day a week for lunch or dinner. You can also invite them to a quilting class or a sewing demonstration to spend time with you. Show them that you are not going to stay at home and grow old gracefully. You are going to live life to the fullest.

Staying at home alone is not healthy for you and even if you don’t feel like getting out you sometimes need to make yourself. In the end, you will enjoy it.
